THE DODIE FAIRY - a story for bedtime

There comes a time in every child’s life when they must let go off something that they love dearly.

For Jamie Johnson aged 2 and three quarters that day had come, as it was they day he was to give up his dummy.

Jamie only used his “Dodie”,  as he called it, at bedtime as it helped him go to sleep, but Mummy said he was “getting to big for a Dummy” and that it was time he left it for the Dodie Fairy.

“What’s a Dodie Fairy?” Jamie asked his Mummy.

“Well,” began his Mummy. “She’s a little bit like the Tooth Fairy but instead of collecting teeth, she collects Dodies from all the little boys and girls who no longer need them and in return she leaves a surprise.”

Jamie loved surprises nearly as much as he loved his Dodie but he still wasn’t sure.

He thought and thought until it was time for bed.  As he got into his pyjamas his mother said, “Well, have you decided to leave your Dodie for the Dodie Fairy yet?”

“Yes” said Jamie, matter of factly, “I think I will”.

He felt a bit sad knowing that tonight would be the last night he would have his Dodie but he was excited at the same time, wondering what the Dodie Fairy might leave him as a surprise.

Jamie climbed into bed and slipped his beloved Dodie under his pillow, saying “Goodbye. I’ll miss you.”

Jamie’s Mummy finished reading him his bedtime story and tucked him in with a cuddle and a kiss.

“Night, Night, Jamie.  Sleep tight.”

“Don’t let the bed bugs bite”, mumbled Jamie in a sleepy voice.

It was midnight at 57 Albion Place where Jamie Johnson was sleeping soundly, dreaming of toy cars and playing football in the park.

Just then a small figure of a girl, no taller than a daisy, slipped through the window  which was left open just a crack, and silently flew over to Jamie’s bedside.

She was a beautiful young girl with long golden hair and wings of the finest lace.  She wore a pink dress and in her hand she carried a cloth bag tied with golden thread.

Carefully she lifted the corner of Jamie’s pillow and reached for the Dodie he had left for her.  As she took hold of it, one of her fairy wings accidently brushed against Jamie’s nose and he awoke with a sneeze.

“Atchooo!!!”

The poor Fairy was propelled across the room and luckily landed softly on Jamie’s pile of cuddly toys.

“So you’re the Dodie Fairy.” exclaimed Jamie. “I was hoping to stay awake to see you, but I must have fallen asleep.  I’m so glad your wing tickled my nose ot I would have missed everything.”

“Hello Jamie, pleased to meet you,” sobbed the Fairy.  “My name is Daisy but I’m afraid you weren’t supposed to wake up.  You see it is forbidden for fairies to be seen by humans.  Any fairy found to have been seen by humans will have her wings clipped and be banished from the Fairy Kingdom forever.”

Jamie looked worried. “They can’t do that to you, it’s not fair.  There must be something we can do.”

“There is one way.”  Daisy relpied.  “I have some magic dust in my pocket in case of emergencies.  If I use it you won’t remember my visit and I’ll be allowed to return to the Fairy Kingdom.”

“Then you must use it,” said Jamie immediately.

“If your sure.  Thank you so much.” replied  Daisy gratefully.  “I will never forget your kindness.”

Then dipping her hand into her pocket, she scattered the magic fairy dust over Jamie.  As the multicoloured Fairy Dust touched his skin, he fell into a deep, deep sleep.

The next morning Jamie awoke and wearily rubbed his eyes.  He remembered nothing of the previous night’s events, but he did remember that he had left his Dodie for the Dodie Fairy.  “Could she really have been?” he thought to himself.

Anxiously he peaked under his pillow, where he had carefully placed his Dodie the night before.

It was GONE! In it’s place sat a little cloth bag tied with gold thread.  He pulled the golden bow that tied the neck of the bag and out spilled 10 chocolate pennies, wrapped in shiny gold foil.

“Wow!” Jamie shouted, “Mummy, come and see this.  Quick!”

Jamie’s Mummy came to see what all the fuss was about.

“What is all this excitement?” she asked.

“Mummy, Mummy, the Dodie Fairy’s been and look what she’s left me!” said Jamie excitedly, showing his Mummy the golden pennies.

“Well you certainly are a lucky little boy,” said his Mummy.

“No, Mummy,” said Jamie “I’m a lucky BIG BOY now”

Then as his Mummy tidied up his bed something landed on the floor at her feet.  It was no bigger than a postage stamp and on it was written, “Thanks a million, love Daisy”

“Who on earth is Daisy?” asked his Mummy.

“Daisy? repeated Jamie  looking puzzled “I’ve no idea,”
